The World According to Humphrey (series) by Betty G. Birney. My 7 year old adores this series and it makes him laugh over and over. Humphrey narrates his experience as a classroom pet. His funny and insightful observations of the children in his class are highly entertaining and Humphrey even learns to read himself! Lots of "un-squeakably good fun" as Humphrey would say.
All Paws on Deck (series) by Jessica Young, illustrated by James Burks. I was slightly skeptical about this series but my 7 year old was laughing his head off and so I picked it up and found the word play to be quite humorous. I'm a big fan of word play as a literary device; I think it gives kids a greater understanding of vocabulary. Haggis the scottie dog plays the straight man to Tank's absentminded goof and together they set sail on an imaginary venture. This series, which is a graphic novel-hybrid, is a great choice for reluctant readers.
Dog Man (series) by Dav Pilkey. The author of Captain Underpants is back with a new, hilarious series that already has my 7 year old begging for the next installment. When a cop and his canine are injured, they undergo surgery but the only way to save them is to create Dog Man! This part-canine, part-human creation feels the push and pull of his instincts from both his natures. Pilkey has said many times that he writes books that fulfill kids' need for silly books - the same need he felt as a second grader. Well, there is not doubt that this book is silly, and little doubt that kids will love it. Enjoy!
One thing to note is that kids in this age group have a wide range of reading levels, spanning all the way from those just starting to read on their own to Harry Potter-level readers. I included a mix of levels on this list, but most of the books are considered chapter books. They can be read by newly independent readers or would work well as a family read-aloud.
There are currently over 8 books out so if your boy likes one of these, it should keep him reading for a while. The books are based on a nice dog who can read and is the leader of his dog friends. Most of the stories involve food lol
Yes, your boy could be reading Harry Potter at this age, but honestly, the books get pretty dark as the go on. This series is age appropriate for those boys who are not ready for the more grown up story line and violence in the later Potter books.
Magic Tree House The Graphic Novel Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne, adapted by Jenny Laird, illustrated by Kelly & Nichole MatthewsHISTORICAL FICTIONEven kids who have read the novels before will love rereading the books in graphic versions. In this first book, Jack begins a book on dinosaurs and wishes that he could travel to see them and zoom, they do! Annie befriends a flying dinosaur and they help save baby dinosaurs.
Kylie JeanREALISTICKylie Jean is all Texas, determined and spunky! Very cute books in a series aimed at girl second-grade readers. My daughter was addicted to these!
As a homeschooling mom, when teaching my children to read, I skipped the beginning readers and headed straight for easy chapter books that were interesting and well written with a slightly challenging vocabulary. Kids dont want to read books with dumb-downed language. It bores them.
This list is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to books for 7 year old boys. If you haven't seen something that would pique your little one's interest, consider going to your local independent book shop or library for advice on alternative books.
This title and its beautiful illustrations are the perfect bedtime read for your 7-year-old fantasy lover. It follows Flory, a night fairy who loses her wings and quickly learns just how big and scary the world can be. We adore this book for its epic plot and fantasy theme.
As you may know 7 year olds vary in reading ability so these chapter books do vary in difficulty, some are fairly easy to read and some are a little more challenging, and some offer greater levels of support through graphics. Overall however, as a general guide, these books are suitable for readers aged 7 to 9 years.
If your child is only just starting out with chapter books you might like to check out our Best Chapter Book Series for Young Readers and Best Graphic Novels for Early Readers collections. The illustrated chapter books on this list are generally easier to read.
Thanks for the list. My son is 9. We read many of the Roald Dahl books together. We recently read Nims Island and Nim at Sea. My husband and Don are currently going through the Chronicles of Narnia series and he loves them. I loved The Neverending Story movie when I was a kid, so I hope to read that with him soon!
In the summer, I aim to give him plenty of freedom to read the books he wants to read (within our set parameters, of course). However, I also make a list of books for him to read that I know will challenge him and take him outside his comfort zone.
This series is fantastic. My son discovered how much he loved reading biographies after being introduced to this series. There are 100 books in the series! Written in the 1940s through the 1960s, each of these books details the life of a boy or girl who grew up to be an American hero. These books cover people such as artists, inventors, sports figures, and leaders.
The Little House books follow the Ingalls family as they travel from the woods of Wisconsin to homestead on the Western Prairies. These were some of my favorite books as a little girl, and I was thrilled when I discovered my sons loved them as well. Farmer Boy was definitely one of their favorites. But there is plenty of adventure in this series to keep boys turning the pages as well.
These books are hilarious. Told from the viewpoint of Hank, the Cowdog, who is head of security on a cattle ranch, these books will keep your son in stitches. The books are fantastic and the audiobooks are a treasure. Consider having the whole family listen to these books together after your son reads them. What a treat!!!
Quinn's favorite new series is The Creature from My Closet. These easy to read chapter books follow the adventures of middle schooler Rob Burnside and the unique creatures that come from his closet. A special door and an accident with his chemistry set result in magically mixed up creatures based on two different book characters.
Big Nate is a series that is often recommended for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's actually based on a comic strip that spun off to include books as well. It follows the adventures of 11-year old Nate who seems to be a mischief magnet. Quinn has only read a couple but seems to enjoy them.
Quinn's first favorite series and the one that really inspired him to read on his own. I think it's a staple book series for many elementary school kids. The boys also enjoy watching the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.
The Wayside School series are chapter books based on an elementary school with supernatural elements. The original book is almost 40 years old and a classic from my own elementary school days! Quinn's 2nd-grade teacher introduced him to the series.
We just started reading the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone together. I'm hoping it lights a wizarding fire with Quinn and he starts reading the Harry Potter books on his own. The first 4 books are available in illustrated versions right now.
The most popular children's book series in Italy is Geronimo Stilton, so it's no surprise that American kids dig them as well. They follow the adventures of a talking mouse named Geronimo Stilton who works as a journalist in New Mouse City. There are a TON of these books which is awesome. The newer series with under a dozen titles kill me because Quinn has a hard time waiting for the next one to be released. So then we have to find another series for him to read in the interim.
Captain Underpants is a little ridiculous but sometimes that's why little boys like. The series heavily features potty humor which isn't everyone's cup of tea. Whatever it takes to get them to read, read, read....
These easy to ready chapter books are fun for young boys. If you have a reluctant reader try starting with comic books. Get them to love to reading graphic novels or comic books and then you can introduce different book series, formats and reading levels to them.
With that in mind, we decided that this year's summer reader poll should be all about keeping kids occupied. We asked you to tell us about your favorite kids' books, from board books for babies to great read-alouds to early chapter books and even a few books for older readers. And thousands of you answered.
This year brought an interesting twist. Since many books on the list have both authors and illustrators, we eventually decided that authors could appear only once, but we didn't mind seeing illustrators again. (Hello, Christian Robinson and Vashti Harrison!) And generally, when someone appeared more than once in the nominations, we went with whichever title was more popular with voters (so Kevin Henkes' Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse beat out Kitten's First Full Moon).
You guys voted in a lot of Robert McCloskey books! But the judges felt Blueberries for Sal was the most compelling read. Sal and her mother head to Blueberry Hill to pick berries for canning; meanwhile a mother bear and her cub are fattening themselves for winter on the other side of the hill, and mix-ups ensue. First published in 1948, this tale of two mothers, two children and a bucket of blueberries is still charming young readers. (For ages 3 to 7) 2ff7e9595c
